Identity
Identity is about how well the channel has portrayed the channel brand and name in the ident, so by this i mean that one purpose of the ident is to show what channel they are watching, this helps the channel be more known for showing specific content, also they want to make their logo popular.
As an example i have chosen a suite of a idents for the channel called sky sports, they have clearly made this ident because they want to show the identity of the channel as we see in all the idents there is their logo, this indicates it is made for telling their audience what channel they are watching. Also throughout the idents if you listen carefully they have the same audio sound, this is relevant as most of the idents have that similar sound which means that specific audio would be assoicated with them. Also you can see from the ident their audio tells the channel which tells the audience the identity of the channel, this is why we know that it is very important to show the logo of the channel so the audience know what the channel they are watching, also it makes the channel more known and the purpose of the ident as we see the sky sports logo in all of the ident which is very important and tells us that specific ident purpose is to inform the audience what channel they are watching.
Branding is very important because branding means that you are showing your potential audience what the channel is about and who it would appeal to, this is very important because if the specific ident does not appeal to the aimed audience it can mean that them not wanting to watch it, this is why they need to make sure the visual style of the ident appeals to the specfic audience. As you can see from images sky uses branding because it is very important.
An example i have chosen as branding is Sky movies as i believe that Sky movies is very important because they use branding because in the idents they have different visual style for different channels, for example on sky movies sci-fi they have added features like spaceship to make sure that they make the audience aware that the channel is about sci-fi and then On Sky Disney we see them use features which will appeal to children as they use bright colors and also they use cartoon characters which will be known like mickey mouse, this tells us that Sky carefully brand to the audience as they need to make sure it appeals to the target audience, as they need to be sure they have visual style which appeals to young. This is why it fulfills the branding purpose.
Marketing
Marketing is when the TV channel decides to promote a special event which is known by the whole nation, as it may be England is participating which means it will appeal to the target audience which they aim at. For example in 2014 there was the world cup which took place in Brazil, the world cup is a special event which takes place every 4 years and each countries football team plays this is why it is very important for broadcasters to show them, however it can cost a lot which means that if the broadcasters get the coverage they need to be able to promote as the ident, so the audience know that channel will be showing the world cup.
The example i have chosen for marketing is ITV because they have made idents for many a speacial event which took place in 2014, they made idents which informed the audience that the world cup footage will be on that specific channel, also ITV want to show content which is relevant to them and as England is participating in the world cup it appeals to the audience they aim at. Throughout all idents during the world cup were about the world cup because they wanted to market to the audience, so that they can actually get more audience watching their channel, this is one purpose of marketing.
Packaging
Packaging is when the channel creates similar ident with the same visuals, by this i mean that they may create similar idents but with a different concept for different shows, for example in the E4 idents we see that the same E4 robot represent the ident, we see the robot doing different things in the other idents.
As you can see from above the all the idents made for E4 include the E4 robot which shows that the robot is the package as he his in all the idents doing different things. All these idents carry same technical element, by this i mean the camera shots are very basic as there is only one camera shot in there ident or mostly the same shot. By having the E4 robot in all the ident they can associate the robot with the channel and also in the ident we seem to see the robot appeal to the audience, as we see the robot actions reflect back to the audience because the robot does things which the audience would do, for example in one of the ident above we see the E4 robot set on the sofa and watches TV this may appeal to the audience which are less productive and like to sit around and watch TV in the evening. Also they have a package which contains different ident concepts, this mean E4 are able to put the different idents depending on programme.
Re-packaging
Re-packaging is when the channel decides to re-structure the channel by this i mean maybe changing the content on the channel. Also re-packaging can help the channel get more viewers as they may appeal to a bigger audience.
BBC IDENT (1963)
BBC BIKE IDENT
As a example i have chosen BBC ONE as they have re-packaged a lot over the years as they have develop and made their idents look better and more exciting, as you can see when BBC first done it, it was not in colour but over the years they made it in coiour, this gave a lot of meaning and also make it visually more exciting. The logo in 1963 is related about the world, this has been continued on many of their idents because we see the circle in all off ident which tells us all though the have re-packaged they still have elements from the old ident. The techinical element have changed over the years and when the re-packaged the ident the use a lot of different camera shots, for example from the BBC ONE bike ident you will see that the camera is in close up first, but then goes back to a long shot we see this in most advert.
Scheduling
Scheduling is when the channel wants to place an ident which is relevant to the programme or show they may be showing next. This is why the channel will look carefully which one of the programmes is popular and they can create a ident for.
An example of i have chosen is STV which is a partnered channel with ITV and we see that they have idents which promote the TV programme or show. Throughout all the idents we see the show appear and then the logo of the channel, as you can see from the above image STV logo is the play button sign. Having to schedule these idents before the programme or show starts, it helps the audience know what programme or show is upcoming, this will help them know what channel they are also watching, all the above idents are very slow as they want to show the programme snippets.
Segmentation Within Scheduling
Segmentation Within Scheduling is when the channel decide to have different segments of the channel, by this i mean they may want to sepearate the programmes according to time, as they may want to reach out to a wider audience. This is very important as it would help the channel be known more.
As my example i have chosen challenge as they have been known for dividing up their channel this means that they'll be appealing to the a lot of people as they can show adult content in the late zone and outside of that time they can appeal to the younger audience, this is how they can appeal to a range of different audience. As you see the ident is very puzzled in one of them to show what the channel is about and how it deals with the game element.
